Tyre maintenance before your summer getaway

Before you head off, make sure that you take the time to properly inspect your vehicle’s tyres. Afterall, you want your vehicle to be as ready as you are.

Travelling long distances in hot weather can be tough on your tyres. Heat can have an affect on the inflation, pressure and safety of your vehicle’s handling. Before heading off, give your vehicle’s tyres a simple once-over. We’ve listed some things for you to consider - some of these can be easily done at home by yourself, while others will require a professional. That’s where the expert team at Donnellans come in.

Visual Inspection

A visual inspection is one of those things that you can do yourself. It’s often a good idea to do this at the same time as you are carrying out a tyre pressure check. Look for signs of damage that may be the result of a sharp object (like a nail or sharp stone) that may have penetrated the tyre. Also be on the lookout for any cuts, tears or bulges that may be the result of contact with road hazards. Don’t forget to check your spare tyre while you’re at it too - it’s so easily overlooked but you won’t want to get caught out without a functional spare tyre!

If you see something that has you concerned, or if you simply aren’t sure about the condition of your tyres then give your local Donnelas store a call. We have stores in Blackburn, Collingwood, Preston, Balwyn and Prahran. We are only too happy to assess your tyres for you and advise you of any potential findings.

Tread Wear

The legal limit for tread depth on your tyres is 1.5mm, which is why you shouldn’t let your tread depth fall below 1.6mm. Legal tread depth is essential when it comes to safe braking and effective water dispersion.

You can assess your tyres using a tread depth indicator (available for purchase from an auto parts store). Or you can use a 20c coin, which is a handy little trick to remember. Simply place it into the tread of your tyre and if the tread doesn’t reach the bill of the platypus that means there’s less than 3mm of tread remaining on your tyres.

Should it turn out that you do need a new set of tyres - Donnellans stock a great range from top brands such as Bridgestone, Continental, Michelin and Pirelli.

Tyre Pressure

An over or under inflated tyre can result in a blowout, not to mention that low tyre pressure increases fuel consumption - and that’s one way to blow your holiday budget that could easily be avoided.

You can check and adjust your tyre pressure yourself, but if you lack the time, know how or confidence then the professionals at your local Donnellans are here to assist. If you are checking your tyre pressure yourself, be sure to always follow and maintain the manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressures. This ensures the safety and performance of your vehicle, as well as tyre longevity. You can locate the recommended inflation pressures in the owner’s manual or on your vehicle’s placard (typically located in the door jamb on the driver’s side but it can also be found in the glove box or in the fuel cap).

Tyre Rotation

A tyre rotation is the process of moving, or rotating, your tyres so that they trade places on your vehicle in a systematic way to achieve as even a wear as possible. It should be done by a professional according to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations, or at maximum intervals of 10,000 kilometers. By completing regular tyre rotations, you’ll help you to get the most life out of your tyres.

Wheel Alignment

If your vehicle feels as though it’s pulling to one side of the road, or your steering wheel starts to vibrate or shudder when you’re driving at higher speeds then you may need to book into your local Donnellans store for a wheel alignment.

Correctly aligned wheels will mean that your vehicle handles better, while also helping you to get the most wear out of your tyres.
