Bridgestone helps the Volkswagen ID R achieve 2 new records in 2019
Ever since its debut on the infamous Pikes Peak track, the Volkswagen ID R has been steadily breaking records around the world.
Since then, the electric freak car has been supplied with Bridgestone Potenza tyres, which are made from a specific soft compound, and 2 new records have followed. Goodwood and most famously the Nürburgring in Nordschleife were now set in its sights.
Bridgestone has a strong brand connection with VW and this relationship is growing further by branching into the Motorsport industry.
The ID R is spearheaded by the racing equivalent to the VW electric range of vehicles due to be rolled out from 2020. The new range of electric vehicles, or ID vehicles, will include SUV’s, passenger and sports models.
After making the switch from Michelin to Bridgestone tyres, the electric ID R had great success during its Nürburgring record breaking run. A new electric vehicle record was set with a time of 6’05”336. The Volkswagen ID R smashed the previous record, which was set by the Chinese car brand NIO and it’s EP9, which had previously set the record at 6’45”90.
They followed this record breaking momentum at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 20 year old record previously run by the Formula 1 race team, McLaren.
After the Volkswagen ID R was calibrated for ‘sprint’, Bridgestone again supplied the vehicle with soft compound Potenza slick tyres and further records were achieved. The Mercedes-McLaren team set an impressive time of 40.6s, 20 years ago and this was only just beaten by the VW ID R team with a time of 40.18 early in the weekend.
